There’s a wide selection of food for vegetarians, but restaurants and people’s perceptions narrows down the choice (not every vegetarian loves mushrooms!).

Let’s clear up the cliché that having a meat-free diet means you have to eat tasteless dinners. Here are some delectable vegetarian burger recipes the whole family can enjoy.

Vegetarian Burger Ideas

Even if you eat meat, give these recipes a try for a low-fat, tasty substitute.

Sweet Potato and Black Bean

Ingredients (makes 4)

  • 1 sweet potato
  • 400g tin black beans
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch
  • ½ red onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

Method

  • Slice the sweet potato into small pieces and sprinkle paprika onto them.
  • Microwave for 5 minutes and roast for around 20 minutes.
  • Add beans, cornstarch and the diced onion and garlic to a bowl and mix together.
  • Take the sweet potato out of the oven and add to the bowl. Mash together so everything is mixed.
  • Divide the mixture into 4 balls and flatten. Cook in the oven for 30 minutes and serve with a fresh salad.

Falafel Carrot Burger

Ingredients

  • 3 carrots
  • 480g chickpeas
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 5 tsp coriander
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • Parsley sprigs
  • Sea salt and pepper to taste

Method

  • Wash and grate the carrots and dice the garlic.
  • Blend the carrots, chickpeas and garlic in a blender until all ingredients stick together.
  • Divide the mixture into 10 shapes and grill for 10 minutes on each side.
  • Serve with your favourite chilli sauce.
